LANDGOED SCHUILENBURG
Landgoed Schuilenburg can be found at the crossroads of the river Regge and the old, main road between the cities of Zwolle and Almelo. The perfect place for asking taxes from the travellers. The castle has been destroyed and rebuild many times. The first mention was already in the year 1125. The last mention dates from 1775 and now all that's left is a barn, a little tax house and the 'Bouwhuis'. The council of Hellendoorn has bought the terrain in 1998 and the barn and Bouwhuis are now official protected property. More information about the history, paintings and found objects can be seen in the barn which is now also used as tea-house, or on the website: www.schuilenburg.nl
ROBBERY KNIGHT PRUIST
Around goes the gossip that one of the former inhabitants of the castle, Joachim Kerstin Pruist, in the years 1580 - 1585, began with killing and robbing. With permission from the state army, this robbery knight burned and looted several villages in the neighbourhood. Purpose of this all was to make it impossible for the Spanish soldiers to get food from these territories... It took the council of the city Deventer several years before they realized how cruel the knight acted. They made a list of alls his cruelties and sent it to the state. Pruist, a former spy of the Orange family, is furious and as revenge he made it possible for the Spaniards to conquer several castles along the river Regge! Just before the Spaniards are about to take the Schuilenburg castle, he sets fire into it and hides a big treasure on a secret place somewhere nearby... The robbery knight continues with his attrocities, but now on his own. At the end of 1785 he 's captured and taken to the city of Zwolle, where he is was to beheaded on the Grote Markt.
